Melanie Islam, AIA, is principal and sustainability director at MASON, where she integrates climate-responsive design, adaptive reuse, and carbon reduction strategies across projects and practice. Her work demonstrates how design can operate as both a technical and civic tool—advancing resilience, equity, and long-term environmental performance.
Islam’s leadership extends into public policy as chair of Honolulu’s Climate Change Commission, where she translates scientific research into actionable guidance that informs citywide planning and development. Her work ensures that resilience and equity remain central to decision-making at the municipal scale.
At the national level, Islam contributes to shaping the profession through AIA’s climate action initiatives, helping refine the AIA Framework for Design Excellence and expand tools that support measurable outcomes. Through collaboration, mentorship, and advocacy, she bridges disciplines and sectors—demonstrating how architects can lead systemic change toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
