Heidrick & Struggles Completes Listening Phase of AIA EVP/CEO Search, Prepares for Market Outreach
AIA, in partnership with Heidrick & Struggles (H&S), has completed the initial listening phase of its executive search for the Institute’s next EVP/Chief Executive Officer.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA), in partnership with Heidrick & Struggles (H&S), has completed the initial listening phase of its executive search for the Institute’s next EVP/Chief Executive Officer. In an effort that exceeded industry norms, H&S engaged more than 90 stakeholders—including members, staff, and partners—through a combination of one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and a broad-based survey.
While most executive searches typically include input from 15–20 stakeholders, AIA and H&S prioritized a more inclusive approach to ensure the membership and staff community feel heard and connected to the process. The insights gathered will directly shape the position specification and inform how H&S presents the role to prospective candidates.
“There’s a strong sense of personal pride and passion across the Institute,” said H&S consultant Tonya Muse, FASAE, CAE, who is leading the search. “We heard optimism and excitement about the future of the profession, and that energy is foundational to finding the right leader for AIA’s next chapter.”
H&S will present a draft job description to the Search Committee for review and approval in the coming days. Once finalized, the position specification will be shared with stakeholder groups and distributed broadly to the market. Outreach will include targeted candidate engagement, as well as open channels for nominations and referrals.
To support this outreach, H&S has established a dedicated email address: AIACEO@heidrick.com.
This next phase of the search is critical in identifying a leader who embodies the values of the Institute and is prepared to advance AIA’s strategic vision.
