America ByDesign is a magazine-style half-hour television program exclusively showcasing some of the best of American architecture from AIA members, from awe-inspiring architectural homes on the lake, to design that reflects culture and learning, to architecture centered on sustainability and collaboration.
AIA has exclusive first access to each episode in the series for the architecture community—ahead of the general broadcast. Just as AIA believes “design belongs to everyone,” ByDesign is committed to showcasing design in technology, living, science, and architecture to everyone. America ByDesign Episode 8 begins in Boulder, Colorado with the Vergence House, a luxurious highly sustainable family home, where design fosters connection with nature. Then, a revitalized modern sanctuary combining luxury travel and holistic wellness - it's the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort in California. Next, discover La Nube in El Paso, Texas, a playful, cloud-like STEAM Discovery Center designed by Snøhetta. Then, in the heart of Chicago's Fulton Market, we showcase 345 N Morgan, an award-winning LEED Silver office building. Finally, we head to Fort Worth, Texas to see the Horse and Mule Barns, a major adaptive reuse project that transformed the historic, dilapidated stockyards into a vibrant, mixed-use development.
America ByDesign Episode 7 begins in Manhattan Beach with Zen House, an innovative minimalist solution to family living in a busy street location. Then, a special designer spotlight with an industry icon, “The People’s Architect", Carol Ross Barney. Next discover the new multi-functional campus for Furkids Cat Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia seamlessly integrated with nature. We head to Colorado Springs to showcase the US Olympic and Paralympic Museum and Park Union Bridge, design inspired by accessibility and movement. Finally, a special design feature on The Ringo Chair by Umbra Design, a practical and eco-friendly stackable seat crafted from a mixed wood fiber composite.
America ByDesign Episode 6 begins in Cascade, Colorado with the award-winning Pikes Peak Summit Visitors Center. Then, we showcase Mini Tower One in Brooklyn, New York, a residential addition that maximizes space flexibility through creative design. Next, discover the carefully composed Stone Family Picnic Glade at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. We showcase Uchiko Restaurant in Houston, Texas - a refined dining experience with Japanese inspiration. Finally, we explore Chroma Modern in Fort Worth, Texas, an award-winning retail space whose glass-box design radically transforms the eyewear shopping experience.
Episode 5 opens in Sydney with The Merchant, a visionary adaptive reuse of a former hotel into a vibrant, post-pandemic workplace. Next, in the heart of Gadigal Country, discover the Music Room, an innovative design utilizing Passive House principles to create a healthy, multigenerational home in a dense urban environment. Then, we showcase Forster Surf Life Saving Club redevelopment, a decade-long project that has transformed a community hub along the New South Wales coastline. Finally, in Glen Iris, Victoria, explore Ripple, a sculptural sanctuary that offers a future-ready architectural argument for aging with dignity.
America ByDesign Episode 4 begins in Denver, Colorado, with the Courtyard House, a home designed to maximize light and privacy in a dense urban neighborhood. Then a Designer Spotlight featuring Thomas Heatherwick, highlighting his transformative public space, Little Island, in New York. Next, explore the innovative One Line Studio in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Then we showcase the adaptable and cutting-edge Harvard University Science & Engineering Complex in Boston, Massachusetts. Finally, BARDAVID in Chicago, Illinois; a flexible wine bar and restaurant utilizing lighting design to create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Episode 3 begins the Mingei International Museum in San Diego is a project of restoring and re-energizing a historic Balboa Park landmark. Then, we showcase The Playground, a whimsical underground amenity space beneath a historic New York skyscraper. Next in Atlanta, Georgia the new Trees Atlanta Headquarters is a once-forgotten industrial site revitalized into a stunning campus that reflects the organization's ecological mission. Finally, discover Blue Oak Landing in Vallejo, California, a zero-energy supportive housing project that sets a new bar for sustainable and resilient design.
This episode begins in Atlanta, Georgia, with Ten 5 Summerhill, a new townhome development designed to reflect contemporary urban living. Then, we showcase a unique hotel combining creative energy and playful design—The Shay at Ivy Station in Culver City, California. Next, discover Oasis at 767 Third Avenue in New York, a project that's transformed a circa-1980s building into a modern hub for office occupants. Then, there's the Seattle Convention Center Summit Building, a project helping to redefine the city's urban core. Season 4 of America ByDesign kicks off with five incredible projects. We begin in Seattle, Washington, with the expansion of the stunning Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion. Next, we visit Ponce City Market in Atlanta, Georgia, a historic building transformed into a bustling hub of culture, food, and retail. Then, the Great Dharma Chan Monastery in Colorado makes a statement about sustainable design. In New York, we showcase The Treadwell, a residential tower that blends the classic Art Deco style of Manhattan with contemporary design. Finally, we head to Orange County, California, to the Sandi Simon Center for Dance at Chapman University—a former orange-packing house that has been beautifully reimagined for the next generation of artists.
