Blue Mosque

Design problem
The Art of Architecture is a juried competition for middle and high school students that explores the relationship between art and the built environment. Students are encouraged to observe and interpret architectural spaces, forms, and details, and express them creatively. All artwork must depict architecture, including buildings, details, or urban settings, from interior or exterior perspectives. Both representational and abstract approaches are welcome. Submissions are accepted in six categories: painting, drawing, mixed media, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
Student solution
My design is based on the interior of the Blue Mosque in Sultanahmet Square, Istanbul. When I first started making this artwork, I wanted to show the creative beauty of the mosque itself. I loved the detailed structure, the colors, and the Islamic architecture from the past itself. I also wanted to show my own creativity by making half of it more abstract, as if it were underwater. This was meant to show that, no matter the setting, the beauty of this mosque would always shine.
