Elkhorn Community Center

Design problem
The goal of this competition is to design a sustainable senior living home community that addresses the unique needs of the elderly population in Las Vegas.
Individual project: Each student will individually design a community center within the senior living community that serves as a social, recreational, and wellness hub for the residents. The design should be highly functional, accessible, and sustainable.
This program is aligned with the ongoing focus on sustainability and affordable housing in Las Vegas, taking into account local climate, water scarcity, and energy efficiency.
In addition, The American Institute of Architects’ Strategic Plan is highly focused on climate change and climate action. Students will be required to design within the AIA Framework for Design Excellence.
Student solution
The new community center is a pillar of the northwestern part of the Las Vegas Valley, providing a space for people to interact with one another as well as nature. The facade and landscaping, incorporating the nature of Vegas, provide an experience before users enter the building, promoting biodiversity and accessible experiences for all ages. Sustainability is central to the center as water is conserved and harvested, and energy is used efficiently. The cool air is kept inside the building through carefully thought-out insulation strategies, along with windows placed in a way that optimizes daylight and minimizes heat entering the building. Inside the community center, occupants will find a place where they can continually interact with others, promoting their mental and physical health. With an open rooftop and courtyard, there is plenty of space in which people can gather.
